How It All Began
Like all the best stories, ours is one of humble beginnings. Andy’s love for technical operation and design was born as a schoolboy. He learnt his craft assisting with lighting in school shows, working out of his parents’ garage and experimenting with all the lighting equipment he could get his hands on. By the age of 17,he had landed his first professional theatre role, working as a follow spot operator on The Buddy Holly Story at The Strand Theatre, London.
Inspired by London’s West End productions, Andy began exploring the possibilities of technical design in small-scale, local theatre. But he soon found his work limited by cost restrictions necessary for community theatre to survive. Driven by a passion for creative experimentation, Andy began to invest in his own high-end technical equipment, and hire it to these productions for a fraction of the cost.
With this new creative freedom, Andy was able to provide professional-level technical design in situations it would be otherwise impossible to achieve. From this, AB Lighting was born.
